19 DWI Arrests Made On Long Island Over Labor Day Weekend, 2 For Leandra's Law

According to police, over a dozen drunk drivers were taken off Long Island roads over the holiday weekend, two violating Leandra Law, while hundreds more were given tickets.

Nineteen people were given DWI charges while driving on Long Island over Labor Day Weekend, with two handed an additional felony charge for drunk driving with a child in the car, police announced.

From Friday, Sept. 1 to Monday, Sept. 4, 19 intoxicated drivers on Long Island were removed from the road and given tickets, the New York State Police announced.

Out of the 19 people, two were given an additional felony charge for driving drunk with a child under the age of 16 in the backseat, violating Leandra Law.

The first occurred on Friday, Sept. 1 in Hempstead, where 25-year-old Emanuel Lindarte-Mujica was arrested for driving while intoxicated with an 8-year-old in the car.

Then, on Monday, Sept. 4, troopers arrested 50-year-old Jose Murillo for driving while intoxicated in Huntington, also with an 8-year-old in the car.

In addition to the Leandra Law charge, Murillo and Lindarte-Mujica are both charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Murillo was also given a charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance. Additional details regarding the substance were not released.

Over Labor Day Weekend, the NYSP reported that 550 tickets were issued in an effort to reduce crashes.

159 of those tickets were for speeding.

According to NYSP, no fatal crashes occurred on the roadways that troopers were monitoring.
